New Polls Show Republicans Could Have a Huge 2020 in Michigan

 

Polls released this week show Republicans are set up well for 2020 in the key battleground state of Michigan.

In a statewide poll released Wednesday, President Donald Trump had a higher job approval rating than its own Governor Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat.

Michiganders graded Trump’s job performance at 36 percent while Whitmer’s job performance rating was thirteen points lower at 23 percent, Fox 2 reported.

Whitmer’s job approval rating cratered 28 percentage points from a June poll that found the first-term governor enjoyed a job approval rating of 51 percent.

Michigan residents soured on Whitmer after she spent the last year trying to convince Michigan residents of her increased gas tax plan to improve infrastructure. However, six in 10 people do not support raising taxes to fix the roads, according to Fox 2.

A separate survey found Republicans can have success in Michigan. U.S. Senate hopeful, Republican John James and current Michigan Senator Gary Peters are virtually tied for the 2020 Senate race. The Vanguard, Denno, Public Sector Consultant poll had Peters ahead of James only by less than one percent: 39.5 percent to 39.3 percent. As The Michigan Star previously reported, a Marketing Resource Group poll detailed the two Senate candidates were in a virtual tie.

This is good news for James as a May poll had Peters up five percentage points on James 42 to 37, according to WLNS6.

Polls have not been kind to Peters of late as a Morning Consult poll showed he has developed the reputation as “America’s least-known Senator.” Furthermore, 28 percent of Michigan residents disapproved of the job he was doing.

Michigan GOP Chairman Laura Cox reacted to the strong polls on Twitter.

“The polling released over the past few days shows that our state is the key to the 2020 elections. The @MIGOP stands ready to keep President @realDonaldTrump in the White House next year, and send a Republican to the U.S. Senate for the first time in decades,” she said.
